Nick Kyrgios pulled out of the BNP Paribas Open tournament at Indian Wells, merely hours before his quarter-final match against Roger Federer on Friday.
The Australian tennis player blamed his sickness down to food poisoning. “After a restless night of being sick, I have nothing left and to play a great champion like Roger, I need to be at my best to have a chance,” he wrote. “I don’t take this decision lightly, these are the matches we train for but I’m in not fit state to take to the court.”

Following Kyrgios’ withdrawal, Federer has moved into the semi-finals, where he will face the winner between fourth seed Kei Nishikori and 17th seed Jack Sock, who will play each other in the quarter-final later in the day.
