Germany’s Lukas Podolski scored a spectacular goal in the second-half as his team beat England 1-0 in a friendly at Dortmund on Thursday. This was Podolski’s farewell game with the German retiring from international football with 130 caps and 49 goals to his name.
This was also England manager Gareth Southgate’s first defeat after being undefeated in four games as England’s interim manager. However, England put up a stellar show against the world champions as Adam Lallana struck the post with Dele Alli saw a shot blocked at point-blank range by Germany keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the first-half.
However, the only difference in game was the 69th minute striker by Podolski, who scored from outside the area giving England keeper Joe Hart no chance to touch the ball. Dele Alli was impressive with as he showed sublime form throughout the match.
Canada vs Scotland ends in draw
Canada, ranked 117th in the world, drew 1-1 with Scotland in their friendly at Easter Road. Falkirk’s Fraser Aird sent Canada in front with a fine finish within the opening 11 minutes. Poor defending by the Scots was also a reason behind Canada’s quick blow. However, Steven Naismith scored the equaliser owing to a quick counter-attack by the hosts. The second-half was a dull affair with neither teams able to get the ball in their opponents net. Scotland are currently second-bottom of Group F going into Sunday’s World Cup qualifying match against Slovenia at Hampden.
