India’s Sania Mirza and her Czech Republic partner Barbora Strycova advanced to the quarter-finals of the women’s doubles at the Miami Open with a thrilling 1-6, 6-1, 10-4 win over Hungary’s Timea Babos and Russia’s Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova on Monday.
In a pulsating encounter which saw the momentum shift both ways, Mirza and Strycova got off to a disastrous start after losing the first set 1-6. But, they made a strong comeback in the second, winning it 6-1 and sending the match into a tie-breaker.
Mirza and Strycova continued their momentum and won the decider 10-4 to enter the quarters. In their round-of-32 clash, they had beaten Demi Schuurs and Renata Voracova 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). The duo will now face sixth seeds Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova and Vania King of the United States for a place in the semi-finals.
