Arsenal striker Alex Iwobi wants Arsene Wenger to remain as manager at the Emirate Stadium.
Wenger has come under intense scrutiny from the fans after Arsenal slipped to sixth position in the Premier League. The Gunners have lost four of their last five games. To make matters worse, the 10-2 aggregate loss to Bayern Munich in the Champions League was one of the most embarrassing defeats in recent memory. Wenger’s contract expires at the end of the season but he has been offered a new two-year deal, which he is yet to sign.
However, the Nigerian striker said that the criticism Wenger faced was unfair. “I don’t think it’s fair the way everybody criticises him. It’s very unfair considering what he’s done. He’s always achieved fourth place, been in the Champions League and been up there with the title contenders,” said Iwobi.
“Of course, if we’re not winning games we’re always going to be under pressure, at a great club like Arsenal you’re expected to win, to be title contenders. It’s hard for him, but it’s not just his fault. Us players haven’t performed as well as we should have been. I’ll tell you now, everyone is fighting 100 per cent for him, we all want to win games, we respect what he’s done for the club, and respect him as a person. Obviously we’ve had a few problems because of the results not going well, but, we’re due to bounce back, it’s just a minor setback,” said Iwobi.
“He’s a great man in my opinion,” said the 20-year-old. “I’d like him to stay. He’s always helped me and developed me as player,” said Iwobi.
