Kolkata club East Bengal on Tuesday appointed Mridul Banerjee as their new coach after Trevor Morgan stepped down on Monday, reported PTI. The AFC-A license-holder was appointed after reports on Monday stated that former Goa manager Armando Colaco was expected to take up the realms of the club.
“Mridul is our choice and has been appointed coach. He has been given a contract till the Federation Cup,” Kalyan Majumdar, the general secretary of the club, was quoted as saying.
Banerjee coached Bengal to a record 32nd title in the Santosh Trophy in Goa recently.
East Bengal are currently third on the I-League table with 27 points from 16 fixtures, below title-contenders Aizawl FC and Mohun Bagan. However, they are out of the title contention due to their 0-1 loss to DSK Shivajians, their fourth on the trot.
East Bengal’s string of losses began with Churchill Brothers. They were then beaten by Chennai City FC and also lost their clash against arch-rivals Mohun Bagan. The derby defeat was enough for the fans demanding Morgan’s resignation.
