Gujarat Lions’ Jason Roy is unlikely to return to the Indian Premier League after playing against Ireland in a two-One-Day-International series against Ireland in May, according to a report in Mirror on Thursday.
“I’m discussing with Andrew Strauss, whether to come back out here to the IPL or to get cracking with Surrey in the Royal London,” said Roy, according to the report. “I think it is probably a good idea to get my head round 50-over cricket as much as possible, especially if I’m not really playing a huge amount out here in India, it is just a bit of a waste really. I’m due to come back for the Ireland game and then after that I could have three games for Surrey before the South Africa series so that would be great preparation I think.”
Gujarat Lions are currently bottom of the IPL table with four losses in five matches, with the 26-year-old Roy playing three of those matches and scoring 14, 31 and 14 not out in those matches.
Along with Roy, England captain Eoin Morgan and Sam Billings will be returning to England in May from the IPL to play the ODI series against Ireland, with matches being held on May 5 and May 7, with the option of going back to India to play in the later stages of the tournament.
However, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes and Jos Buttler will play the entire group stage of the tournament after being given clearance to miss the ODI series against Ireland.
