One of Indian football’s biggest icons, Sunil Chhetri has had a crucial contribution in the national men’s team breaking into the top-100 in the latest FIFA rankings for the first time in 21 years, reported Times of India. However, according to an interview in Times of India on Sunday, Chhetri suggested that a spot in the Asian Cup was a bigger priority for him.
“It’s good to be among the top 100 teams in the world, but such rankings are insignificant for me. What we need is to qualify for the Asian Cup. That should be the goal for the national team,” said Chhetri, ahead of the Federation Cup.
India, under coach Stephen Constantine, have drawn with Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar and Macau in the final qualification round for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup to be held in the United Arab Emirates. They started their Group A campaign with an away win in Myanmar. Two teams from the group will qualify for the continent’s premier competition. “We have got a good start and we need to keep the momentum going,” Chhetri said, India’s top goal scorer.
