India women’s cricketer Jhulan Goswami on Tuesday became the world’s leading wicket-taker in one-day cricket as she took three wickets against South Africa in the Women’s Quadrangular Series in Potchefstroom.
The 34-year-old took her tally to 181 wickets in 153 matches. She overtook Australia’s Cathryn Fitzpatrick, who had taken 180 wickets in 109 matches. Incidentally, the Australian retired from the game in 2007.
Goswami, who is a right-arm fast bowler, has 40 Test scalps to her name and 50 wickets in Twenty20 till date. She has an economy of 3.18 in one-day cricket.
On Tuesday, she was India’s most economical bowler finishing with figures of 3/20.
India won the toss and opted to ball first against the host. South Africa were outclassed by a splendid bowling performance by Shikha Pandey and Goswami who took three wickets apiece. Ekta Bisht, Deepti Sharma and Poonam Yadav took one wicket each.
However, 34-year-old Goswami picked up the crucial wickets of Nadine de Klerk, Masabata Klaas and Raisibe Ntozakhe and in the process, became the highest wicket-taker in one-day cricket.
