The trio of Abhishek Verma, Chinna Raju Srither and Amandeep Singh assured themselves of a silver medal in the Compound Men’s team event at the World Cup group stage 1 at Shanghai on Thursday.
The Indian team, seeded fourth beat the top-seeded USA men’s team 232-230 in the semifinal and will face Colombia, the 10th seeds who overcame a formidable South Korean team in the quarterfinals.
The three Compound archers had started the day by beating Vietnam in the pre-quarters and then Iran in the quarterfinals as they geared up to face the US. The first and the fourth sets ended up all even-stevens but the third set was crucial for the Indian team, as they shot a perfect 60 as compared to their rivals’ 57 to nudge in front.
Olympic gold medallists South Korea upset in recurve
Gold medallists from South Korea, the women’s Recurve team which qualified first, crashed out to the Russian team in the quarterfinals, blanked by the latter 6-0.
The Indian team, led by Deepika Kumari crashed out to the United States in the pre-quarterfinals, losing 6-2. All three top seeds, South Korea, Chinese Taipei and Japan lost in the quarterfinals on a day of upsets in the Women’s Recurve team section.
The men didn’t fare much better, losing 6-0 in the quarters to the Japanese, having beaten Canada 5-1 in the Round of 16.
In the recurve teams section, India does not find itself in a medal position match while the men’s Compound and mixed Compound teams will play for Gold and Bronze respectively at the weekend.
In individual matches tomorrow, Atanu Das and Viswash will compete in the Round of 32 in the men’s Recurve while Deepika Kumari and Preeti will face each other for a spot in the Round of 16.
In the Compound section, Verma, Srither and Gurwinder Singh have matches in the Round of 32 while Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Divya Dhayal will compete in the corresponding Round in the individual Women’s section.
