Anil Kumble, the current head coach of the Indian national cricket team, proposed former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan’s name for the role of a bowling coach, according to a report in the Times of India on Thursday. This recommendation was reportedly made by Kumble during his meeting with the office-bearers of the Board of Control for Cricket in India and the Committee of Administrators before the Indian Premier League final.
“Yes, Kumble wants a bowling coach for the team, and he has recommended Zaheer’s name for the role,” said an unnamed official, in the report. However, it remained unclear if Khan will join the team in England for the Champions Trophy in June is still unclear. “We’ll discuss Kumble’s proposals at an appropriate forum,” said an official quoted in the report.
The report added that the veteran Indian pacer was approached to be India’s bowling coach last year too but could not reach an agreement with the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
Promote Bangar
According to the report, Kumble, during the meeting, also wanted Sanjay Bangar to be promoted to an assistant coach from his current role as batting coach of the team.
“He wants Bangar to be made the assistant coach. Currently, he’s the batting coach of the team,” said the official. “It remains to be seen if the BCCI accedes to Kumble’s request, because an assistant coach’s salary is Rs 4 crores.”
Kumble also want a permanent manager to accompany the team at all times. “Currently, the Board deputes any of its state association officials for the job. Kumble wants a professional administrator to be the permanent manager of the team,” said a source.
