Nick Kyrgios’ French Open ended in the second round on Thursday when he lost 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, 6-2 to big-serving Kevin Anderson of South Africa.
The eighteenth seed Aussie led by a set and break, before Anderson turned the match on its head. The 31-year-old first overturned a 2-4 deficit in the second set, by reeling off six straight games to level the match at one-set all.
Kyrgios won only his opening service game, in the first game of the third set before Anderson won the remaining six games to lead in the match.
The fourth set also looked to be heading in a similar direction as the third with the South African winning four consecutive games to take a blistering 5-1 lead, before the increasingly frustrated Kyrgios wrenched back his lead by winning the seventh game. It was, however, far too late for the 22-year-old as Anderson served out the match in the eighth game of the set.
Anderson, ranked 56th in the world, made the most of the Australian’s 42 unforced errors to progress to the third round where he will face Britain’s Kyle Edmund. Edmund defeated Argentina’s Renzo Olivo in their second round match, in straight sets 7-5, 6-3, 6-1.
