India captain Virat Kohli will not have “veto power” in selecting the next head coach of the cricket team, reported the Times of India. While Kohli will be consulted, the final decision solely rests with the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s Cricket Advisory Committee, comprising Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, the report added.
“Kohli can say whatever he wants but he won’t get his choice of coach until the advisory panel agrees to it,” an unnamed BCCI official told the daily. “He doesn’t have the veto power to decide the new coach. He only has the power to select the playing XI. This does not mean that he can’t give his preferences. He can spell out his choice of candidate but the final call will be taken by the CAC.”
The BCCI’s Committee of Administrators will also not be a part of the selection process, the report said. Kohli has already spoken to Tendulkar, Ganguly and Laxman recently on the matter, it added. While Virender Sehwag has been reported as the favourite to become the next head coach, TOI quoted another BCCI official saying that “foreign coaches actually work without any biases”.
