Former national basketball captain Vishesh Bhriguvanshi has become the first Indian basketball player to be signed by the National Basketball League (NBL) on Thursday, the professional basketball league of Australia. He has signed a one-year training deal with the Adelaide 36ers.
Standing at 195 cm, he averages of 17.4 points and 4.5 assists per game and played in the NBL Draft Combine in Melbourne this year. He will train with the club, but is only eligible to play if he replaces an injured player, according to the 36ers website.
Speaking to the Times of India, Vishesh spoke about the importance of this move in his career.
“Every player has a dream to play for a reputed league some day, and so it was my dream. Representing the nation is very different feeling, and I am definitely proud of that, but playing in a league like this has always been my dream and that is what keeps me motivated.”
Adelaide 36ers Chief Executive Officer Guy Hedderwick is pleased to have Bhriguvanshi train with his team.
“Vishesh is an exciting talent from India, renowned for his court presence and intuitive feel for the game,” Hedderwick was quoted as saying on the 36ers website.
“It’s great to have signed the first Indian player to the NBL and we’re looking forward to connecting with the Indian community during his basketball journey.”
