P Harikrishna won his sixth-round game against the fourth ranked Grandmaster Levon Aronian of Armenia at the Geneva FIDE Grand Prix on Wednesday.

Both players came up with balanced moves at the start of the game, but the 22nd ranked Harikrishna, who was playing with black, leveraged on his higher-ranked opponent’s slight error to win the game.

While analysing the game, Harikrishna noted, “It was a balanced position throughout the game but he miscalculated a move and from there on I had the upper hand and won the game.”

This was Harikrishna’s second win in six games, and first after having drawn the last four consecutive rounds. Following his victory, the 31-year-old also moved atop the points table with four points out of a possible six, alongside Russia’s Alexander Grischuk and Azerbaijan’s Teimur Radjabov. In addition, Harikrishna has also solidified his chances of playing in the Candidates tournament.

As it also stands, Harikrishna will take on Grischuk in the seventh round on Thursday. Evaluating his next round opponent, Harikrishna said, Grischuk is an interesting player and is playing some solid chess, taking chances when the opponent slips. I hope to keep the run going and play a good game today too.”
