Newly appointed India coach continues to build his backroom staff and has asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India to use the services of batting legend Sachin Tendulkar as team consultant during overseas tours, reported Indian Express.

“Ravi put forward the idea of having Sachin on board as a consultant for a very short period. But the committee promptly reminded him about the conflict of interest clause,” a member of the committee,” a member of the BCCI special committee was quoted as saying by PTI.

The member also revealed that if Tendulkar joins hands with Shastri, he would have to relinquish other commitments, which includes being a CAC member and the post of mentor for Indian Premier League franchise Mumbai Indians, “If Tendulkar does accept the role, it would mean that he would have to let go of his various other commitments including the IPL. And expecting someone to be around for an extremely short period and leave his other professional commitments is asking for a bit too much,” the member added.

The three-member Cricket Advisory Committee featuring Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman had recommended former captain Rahul Dravid and pacer Zaheer Khan as consultants. Sanjay Bangar has been named as the assistant coach.

Shastri was reunited with his backroom staff during his stint as team director between 2014-’16 after the Board of Control for Cricket in India named Bharat Arun as the bowling coach on Monday.

The report added that the BCCI was keen on using the services of former players specifically on abroad tours. The board has also agreed terms for a pay hike with Shastri after a meeting with BCCI president CK Khanna, secretary Amitabh Choudhary, Committee of Administrators member Diana Edulji and CEO Rahul Johri.

The 55-year-old will earn Rs 7.5 crore, Rs 1.5 crore more than former coach Anil Kumble. Bangar will pocket an annual sum of Rs 2.20 crore and Arun Rs 2 crore.

Earlier, Shastri had opened doors for Dravid and Zaheer to offer their services to the Indian team, depending on their availability as the former has coaching committments with the India U-19 and India ‘A’ teams while the latter still plays in the Indian Premier League.
