After going down to Sergey Karjakin in round 12, Fabio Caruana defeated Levon Aronian in the 13th and penultimate round to top the standings of the Candidates Chess Tournament in Berlin.

Caruana forced Aronian into resignation after the 39th move to top the table. The American, with black pieces, will face Russian Grandmaster Alexander Grischuk in the final round.

Aronian, one of the favourites to win the tournament, has scored only 1.5 points from the last eight rounds. He’s last on the standings with just four points.

Sergey Karjakin, with 7.5 points follows Caruana with eight points on the table. He will have the benefit of playing with white pieces against Ding Liren in the next round.

Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who’s joint-second, will play Vladimir Kramnik in the final round.
