Fifa president Gianni Infantino has proposed a new mini-World Cup, featuring eight teams, to be held every two years. It will be in addition to the traditional quadrennial tournament.
According to Reuters, the tournament will be called “Final 8” and will be held at the end of a new global Nations League competition part of the world body’s ambitious plan to reform international football.
The report stated that the Fifa estimates the Nations League will be worth $25 billion and would be played in a 12-year cycle.
Infantino is said to have procured investment from an unidentified group of investors who have proposed spending $25 billion to secure the rights to the tournament, the report added.
The tournament is slated to be played around October-November every year starting from 2021.
According to the ambitious plan, the Confederations Cup which is held every four years ahead of the World Cup, will be scrapped.
