Five persons died on Friday after a portion of a dargah near Humayun’s Tomb in Delhi’s Nizamuddin area collapsed, ANI reported.

The incident took place at the Dargah Sharif Patte Shah.

Joint Commissioner of Police Sanjay Jain said that a group of people had gathered at the dargah for congregational Friday prayers. “They had gathered in two rooms to take shelter from the rain,” the official said. “However, the back wall of one of the rooms collapsed, and subsequently, the roof collapsed.”

Ten persons were rescued from the site and taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital, Jain said, according to ANI.

“Out of the 10 people, five people at AIIMS Trauma Centre have died,” the police official said. “The rescue operation has been completed.”

The police, National Disaster Response Force and fire brigade were conducting rescue operations at the site.

RK Patel, Superintending Archaeologist with the Archeological Survey of India, Delhi Circle, told The Hindu that the roof and a wall of a mosque next to the boundary wall of Humayun’s Tomb collapsed.

“It is neither part of the Tomb complex nor is it on premises of the ASI monitored property,” Patel said. “However, the gates of the tomb were opened to facilitate rescue operations.”
