Bengal elections: Repolling in booths where taping of EVM buttons is verified, says EC
The BJP claimed that tapes had been used to cover the voting button for the party’s candidate in Falta constituency.
The Election Commission on Wednesday said that repolling will take place in election booths in West Bengal where it is “verified” that the Electronic Voting Machines had been tampered with, ANI reported.
The statement by the state’s chief electoral officer came after the Bharatiya Janata Party alleged that a tape had been used to cover the button that is to be used for vote for the Hindutva party, in several polling booths in Falta Assembly constituency.
BJP publicity chief Amit Malviya on Wednesday demanded an immediate re-election in “all affected booths in Falta where such incidents have occurred”.
One of the videos posted by Malviya on social media purportedly showed that the voting buttons for the BJP candidate and another nominee in booth number 170 had been covered with a tape.
Malviya claimed that booth number 189 had also been “compromised in a similar manner along with several others”.
This is what Mamata Banerjee was defending when she spoke up for Jehangir Khan, a criminal contesting on a TMC ticket from Falta in Diamond Harbour.

Malviya said that the alleged electoral fraud was the “so-called ‘Diamond Harbour Model’, the same template that helped [Trinamool Congress chief] Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee secure his Lok Sabha seat”.
Falta is an Assembly segment in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency where Abhishek Banerjee is an MP.
Jahangir Khan is the Trinamool Congress candidate in Falta.
The second and final phase of polling in West Bengal was underway on Wednesday. Voting was being held in 142 of the state’s 294 constituencies, including those in Kolkata. The first phase of polling, which covered 152 seats, was held on April 23 and a record turnout of 93.2% was reported.
The votes will be counted on Monday.
The Trinamool Congress has been in power since 2011. The main Opposition in the state over the years has shifted from the Left parties to the BJP.
