The Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Friday extended unconditional support to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam for forming the government in Tamil Nadu.

The two communist parties have two MLAs each. With their backing, the total number of MLAs in support of the TVK-led government reached 119.

After the announcement by the communist parties, Vijay met Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and staked claim to form the government.

On Monday, the TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the Tamil Nadu elections, winning 108 seats, but fell short of the halfway mark. The Congress, which has five MLAs, announced support from the party on Wednesday, followed by the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, which has two legislators.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) State Secretary TT Shanmugam, however, said that the two parties will not be part of the Cabinet, and that they only took the decision to ensure that there is no re-election, reported ANI.

The VCK, the CPI and the CPI (Marxist) were part of the alliance led by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam.

Outgoing Chief Minister MK Stalin urged Governor Rajendra Arlekar to “take immediate action to form a new administration in accordance with the Constitution, in order to avoid any delay in the formation of the government”.

As the Assembly has been dissolved following the election results, it is important for a new government to be formed so that the welfare of the state can be ensured, said Stalin.

While Vijay had met Arlekar on Wednesday and Thursday, the governor had not accepted his proposal to form the government, saying that he had not secured the requisite majority support.

The MK Stalin-led Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam won 59 constituencies in the Assembly elections. The National Democratic Alliance, mainly comprising the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and the Bharatiya Janata Party, won 53 seats.
