Civic officials protest outside Arvind Kejriwal's house
BJP councillors and mayors from the cash-strapped Municipal Corporation of Delhi organised a dharna, saying the chief minister has withheld their funds.
Bharatiya Janata Party councillors protested outside Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s house on Tuesday, claiming he had withheld funds for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. The protesters included some of Delhi's mayors and other top functionaries in the MCD. The Delhi police detained several people, the Economic Times reported.
The Delhi government and MCD have been embroiled in a battle over funds in the last few months. Last week, MCD sanitation workers protested against the non-payment of salaries, claiming they were owed around Rs 300 crore. The workers showed their dissidence by dumping garbage in several parts of the city for three days. The MCD has been facing a severe financial crisis, and has been demanding a bailout from the Delhi government, claiming their funds have been curtailed. However, the AAP government has refused to provide more money, saying they have already given them hundreds of crores.
