An earthquake of magnitude 6.3 shook eastern Indonesia on Wednesday, with the epicentre at a depth of 14 kilometres under the Alor Sea, the US Geological Survey said. Agence France-Presse reported minor damage to property, but no casualties yet.

The tremors were felt strongest in Alor, a string of islands closest to the quake's focal origin. A disaster agency official said that at least one building had collapsed and they were reaching out for more information in less accessible areas. Indonesia's national disaster agency spokesman said, "The quake did not trigger a tsunami but sent people fleeing in Alor."

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide and cause frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
