A 19-year-old nurse was allegedly raped in a moving bus by its driver at Hoskote town in Bengaluru’s eastern outskirts on Thursday, according to the police. After committing the crime, the accused dumped the victim in a deserted area and fled. The accused have been arrested and the bus seized after the victim filed a police complaint. The police said that a case had been registered under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code (punishment for rape) and the investigation was on. The bus was registered in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

The incident comes close on the heels of the alleged gangrape of a 22-year-old BPO employee in a van last month. Karnataka home minister G Parameshwara said the government would not tolerate such incidents and that "all necessary action will be taken immediately within the framework of law". Questioned about repeated incidents of rape in private transport vehicles, Parameshwara said, "IT companies and other such organisations that operate or hire vehicles on contract will have to share background data about their drivers. We are already doing it. We will start monitoring it more seriously."
