The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensex plunged below the 26,000-mark and closed at a six-week low of 25,743.26 points on Tuesday. The National Stock Exchange index Nifty also slipped below the 7,900-level by losing 58.15 points, or 0.73%, to 7,857.05 points, reported the Press Trust of India. The drops meant the Samvat 2071 year of the Hindu calendar ended on a weak note.

The closing represented a Sensex drop of 1,043.97 points or 3.89% from the closing on Samvat 2070, which was on October 22 last year. The NSE Nifty too registered a fall of 212.55 points or 2.65%. In a Samvat year, this is the third worst return given by the Sensex in a decade.

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance's loss in the Bihar polls on Sunday had seen the Sensex fall over 600 points in early trades on Monday. However, it had settled with a loss of just 144 points, or 0.6%, at 26,121 at closing.
