Myanmar elections: Aung San Suu Kyi wins parliamentary seat, calls for reconciliation talks with military
Her National League for Democracy party has also taken 90% of the seats declared so far.
Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has won her parliamentary seat, according to official results declared on Wednesday. Her National League for Democracy party has also taken 90% of the seats declared so far, in an election that will give the country its first government in decades that is free from military control.
According to reports, Suu Kyi has written to the military’s commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing, President Thein Sein and House Speaker Shwe Mann, requesting a meeting to discuss the election and “national reconciliation”, according to the NLD’s Facebook page. Myanmar’s information minister Ye Htut said that the meeting would only take place after all the election results are declared. He added the president and the military would respect the outcome of the polls.
Suu Kyi is barred from the presidency due to a constitutional ban relating to her foreign spouse and children. However, she said last week that she will be “above the president, adding that the president will “have no authority” and “will act in accordance with the decisions of the party”.
