Paris summit: India hits back at John Kerry's criticism
Environment minister Prakash Javadekar said India is not in the habit of taking pressure from anybody.
Environment and Forest minister Prakash Javadekar on Sunday hit out at United States Secretary of State John Kerry for his remarks that India would be a challenge at the upcoming United Nations climate change summit at Paris. Javadekar said the comments were “unwarranted and unfair”, adding that India is “not in the habit of taking any pressure from anybody”. The Union minister also pointed out that some developed nations played a huge role in the problem of climate change.
John Kerry had said in a recent interview to the Financial Times that India would pose a challenge at the climate change summit, and that a lot of focus was on the country to accept more of a role in addressing global warming. Javadekar told PTI that India has been proactively trying to bring about a consensus on the topic among nations.
World leaders are looking to achieve a legally binding and universal agreement on climate at the conference, with the aim of limiting global warming to no more than two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
