India failed to defend a 1-0 lead against the world's number one team as Australia bounced back with two late goals to win 2-1 at Raipur to take a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series. The first match at Rajnandgaon on Thursday was drawn 2-2.

Both teams failed to score in a scoreless first quarter, but India's Devindar Walmiki managed to score from a penalty corner in the second. Australia attacked fiercely, but India held on grimly till the end of the third quarter. But just when it seemed that India could hold on to their slim lead, their tendency to concede late goals came back to haunt. Jacob Whetton directed a pass through to goal to level terms. Then Aran Zalewski put in another deflected goal to give Australia the lead.

India had conceded a similar late goal in the first match of the series to let the Kookaburras escape with a draw. This time, their habit has come back to bite them. With one match left in the series, they will be hoping for a better performance in the final match.
