All schools in US county shut down over Islamic calligraphy assignment
Some parents saw the homework as an attempt to convert their children to Islam and demanded the school to fire the teacher.
Every single school in Augusta County, Virginia, in the United States was shut down on Friday after a teacher assigned her students homework on Islamic calligraphy. Augusta County Schools said in a statement that there has been no specific threat of harm to students, but schools and school offices will be closed as a safety precaution.
A standard homework assignment on major world religions, where students were asked to copy religious Arabic calligraphy, resulted in an angry backlash from parents. Some saw the homework as an attempt to convert their children to Islam and demanded the school to fire the teacher, reported CNN. At the same time, some former students took to social media to defend her, said the report.
