The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed writer Arundhati Roy’s appeal seeking exemption from appearing before a court in connection with an article she wrote for Outlook magazine in May last year, Hindustan Times reported. The apex court directed her to appear before the Bombay High Court next week and also issued a notice to the state on her petition.

Last month, the high court had issued Roy a criminal contempt notice for the article, in which she had expressed her views on the arrest of Delhi University professor GN Saibaba, who is accused of having links with Maoists. The high court bench had said her language in the article was “nasty” and that it contained “scurrilous” remarks against the police, the state administration and the judiciary.
