Tanzanian woman stripped, beaten by mob in Bengaluru
Locals thought she was involved in an accident on Saturday night when a Sudanese national crashed his car into a woman.
A 21-year-old Tanzanian woman was stripped and beaten in Bengaluru late on Saturday, when locals thought she was involved in an accident. The woman had gone to the spot where a Sudanese man’s car had hit a woman, when a mob allegedly stripped her and paraded her naked, presuming she was connected to the accident. The mob also torched her car (pictured above). The woman is a second-year student at Acharya College. The 35-year-old Hesarghatta resident who was hit by the car later died.
Deccan Chronicle reported that the Tanzanian woman was in another car with four others and reached the accident spot half an hour after it took place. Her friends escaped, but she did not, and the mob later set fire to their car. The report also said that the police did nothing to rescue her. Bosco Kaweesi, legal advisor of the All African Students Union in the city, said that Micah S Pundugu, the Sudanese driver of the car that hit the woman, was also beaten by the mob. Kaweesi said Pundgugu and the Tanzanian student did not know each other. The Tanzanian High Commission has asked the government to follow up on the matter.
The student also reportedly tried to file a complaint with the police, who refused to register it till she took the driver of the other car to them. Kaweesi said the Tanzanian Embassy sought a report from student leaders so that they can look into the matter. He also said that the incident has left African students worried and scared.
