A Turkish court on Friday sentenced two Syrian human smugglers to four years and two months in prison in connection with the death of three-year-old boy Aylan Kurdi and four others, according to the country’s state-run Anadolu Agency. While Muwafaka Alabash and Asem Alfrhad were convicted of human smuggling, the court acquitted them of the charge of causing the deaths through deliberate negligence, Associated Press reported.

The image of Kurdi’s lifeless body lying face-down on a Turkish beach drew the world’s attention to the refugee crisis. His brother Galip Kurdi and mother Rihan Kurdi were among the other victims who drowned last September after their boat capsized en route to the Greek island of Kos from Bodrum in Turkey. The defendants denied any involvement in the child’s death and blamed his father Abdullah Kurdi instead, saying he had arranged the trip. Abdullah is now back in Syria.

While trials in Turkey usually take months – sometimes even years – to conclude, Friday's verdict came just a month after the matter was brought to court. Turkey has been cracking down on human smuggling to contain the number of refugees and migrants entering Europe through the country. According to Turkish officials, more than 4,400 human smugglers, who organise these dangerous sea journeys in frail boats, have been detained.
