Indian Railways suffered Rs 55.92-crore loss because of Jat reservation stir
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said there is no mechanism through which his ministry can recover the damages from those who caused it during the protests.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Wednesday informed the Lok Sabha that the national carrier suffered a loss of Rs 55.92 crore between February 12 and 24 because of disruptions caused by Jat protestors seeking reservation. This included damage to the Railways' property, and the cancellation of 2,314 trains and tickets during the agitation, Prabhu said. The protests started in Haryana, before spreading to other parts of the country.
The Union minister added that during the period of the agitation, 1,033 mail or express trains, and 1,101 passenger trains were cancelled, while 259 were diverted. In addition to this, the schedules of another 430 trains got affected by the violence that followed the protests. Prabhu also said the Railways does not have a mechanism through which it can recover the damages from those who caused it during the agitation.
