Delhi HC judge sends plea seeking cancellation of Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail to chief justice
Earlier in the day, the court heard a petition that claimed the student leader’s interim bail should be revoked as he had violated the conditions on which it was granted.
Delhi High Court’s judge Justice Pratibha Rani on Wednesday sent to the Chief Justice’s bench a plea seeking cancellation of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union President Kanhaiya Kumar’s bail . Justice Rani was hearing a petition filed by lawyer Prashant Kumar Umrao, who claimed that Kumar made “anti-national” speeches after being released from jail, and thus violated his bail conditions.
According to PTI, the petition claimed that Kumar raised slogans “challenging the sovereignty and integrity of the nation”. The Chief Justice will now have to decide which bench will hear the plea, ANI reported.
Kumar, who was charged with sedition for his alleged involvement in a controversial campus protests last month, was granted interim bail on March 2. A bench headed by Justice Rani ordered Kumar to be released for six months with a personal bond of Rs 10,000 and a surety from a faculty member. The order contained instructions that Kumar should not repeat the allegedly seditious slogans – though there is no evidence that he did so to begin with. The order also instructed Kumar to “not participate actively or passively in any activity which may be termed as anti-national".
