A 20-year-old man accused of killing national-level volleyball player Sangita Aich near Kolkata surrendered before the police on Saturday. According to reports, the 14-year-old Aich was hacked to death by Subrata Sinha while she was practising for a game in Barasat, on the outskirts of Kolkata, on Friday. "I had been reduced to take the extreme step after I found out that Sangita had been cheating on me," Sinha told ANI, after surrendering. "She had been in a relationship with me for the past two years," he added.

Aich, a Class IX student, had played volleyball twice at the national level and thrice at the state level, reported Hindustan Times. According to the police, Sinha, who is also a national-level volleyball player, came to the practice camp and demanded that Aich speak to him. When she refused, he tried to attack her with a cleaver. Aich's coach, Swapan Das, tried to save her by attacking Sinha with a chair, but he was also stabbed. Sinha then chased Aich to her house, located close to the camp, and hacked her to death. Aich's family claimed that Sinha had threatened her on several occasions in the past, after which they had approached the police, but no action was taken.
