Migrant worker dies in Kerala after being tortured, tied up, left on the road in the sun for hours
Kailash Jyothi Behra, 31, a native of Assam, was mistaken for a thief by villager in Kottayam district on his first day in the state.
A migrant worker from Assam died in Kerala on Wednesday after being tortured and left tied on the road in the sun for hours by locals, reported The Indian Express. Police said Kailash Jyothi Behra, 31, was mistaken for a thief by some people in Chiravamuttam village. They beat him up, tied up his hands and legs, and forced him to lie down on the road even as it was 37 degrees Celsius outside. It was his first day in the state.
Benhra had arrived in Kottayam with three others, but he got separated from his friends on his way to Chingavanam. Some locals found him wandering in the village around noon, and thought he was a miscreant. “Police reached the spot on being alerted. We found him foaming at the mouth and took him to hospital, where the doctors declared him dead,” a police officer told the English daily. He said a mob of 50 men had surrounding the victim when the police reached the spot. The autopsy report is awaited to ascertain the cause of death. The accused have been identified. Though no one have been arrested yet, officials said further action will be taken based on the report.
