No ban on water supply to Maharashtra’s liquor industry, says Supreme Court while dismissing plea
A court had earlier told the government to reduce water given to state breweries and distilleries by 60% because of the severe water crisis.
The Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a plea asking for a total ban on water being provided to Maharashtra’s liquor manufacturers, reported PTI. Earlier, the Aurangabad bench of the Bombay High Court had ordered the state to cut water supply to the industry by 60% from May 10 onwards. The state has been facing a severe water crisis, especially in the Marathwada and Vidarbha regions.
The Centre had sent trains carrying up to six crore litres of water to the drought-hit district of Latur. In April, the Bombay High Court had also ruled that all Indian Premier League cricket matches had to be moved out of the state, owing to the amount of water used to maintain cricket pitches.
