Centre not in favour of selling refurbished iPhones in India, says Nirmala Sitharaman
The finance ministry last week rejected a recommendation to waive a 30% local sourcing norm for Apple to sell the phones in its own branded stores.
Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday said the government was not in favour of importing and selling refurbished iPhones in the country. Her announcement comes after the finance ministry rejected a proposal asking for a waiver on a 30% local sourcing regulation in order for Apple to open its own stories in India. The ministry, however, has allowed Apple to set up single-brand retail stores in the country.
Sitharaman said that the commerce ministry supports a waiver of the 30% local sourcing rule for high-end products in the country, PTI reported, and added that both ministries will have further talks on the issue. “We are not talking about changing the rule for manufacturing. We are just saying let's be clear on single-brand retailing… This is the issue on which we have genuine concerns and therefore, within the government, I want a consensus to evolve,” she told mediapersons.
Apple now sells its products in India through other retail outlets. Sales of Apple products in India have grown 56% in the last quarter, after the company had its first quarterly revenue drop in 13 years last month, Livemint reported.
