Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises Sunil Bharti Mittal has been elected chairman of the International Chamber of Commerce. Mittals’s appointment as the 51st ICC chairman makes him the third Indian to head the world’s largest business organisation.

“At a time when the global economy is facing unprecedented challenges, I am committed to ensuring ICC plays a central role as the voice of business in shaping policies to support inclusive growth,” he said. He will focus on guaranteeing that trade and investment boost economic growth and create jobs, he added.

Mittal will replace Terry McGraw, the chairman emeritus of S&P Global, who will now serve as the honorary chairman of ICC, The Economic Times reported. John Denton, the partner and CEO of Corrs Chambers Westgarth, will now be the vice chairman of ICC, taking over from Mittal, who also served on the current Prime Minister of India’s Council on Trade and Industry.

The ICC has more than 6.5 million members in more than 130 countries.
