The Devendra Fadnavis government has appointed Dr Dilip Wange the new registrar of the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), however, it has not gone down well with many in the medical fraternity, reported dna. The Indian Medical Association has shot off a letter to the Fadnavis as well as moved the Bombay High Court challenging the decision.

"With so many responsibilities already, he won't be able to do justice to his present appointment. The MMC is the state's most important quasi-judicial body of doctors that serves as an ethical watchdog, responsible for medico-legal cases and grants registration to doctors," the council of allopathy medicine practitioners said. Wange, who is an associate professor at RA Poddar Ayurveda College, is also the registrar of the Ayurveda council in the state.

The registrar of the council is its chief executive who must attend all its meetings, besides overseeing the council's accounts, its staff and making sure that the provisions of the Maharashtra Medical Council Act are properly implemented, according to Firstpost.

At the same time, the government also ordered an enquiry into the decisions taken by the MMC in the past five years, reported the Times of India. However, minister for medical education Vinod Tawde denied the report. "We had told the council that its registrar's appointment was not legal. We accordingly appointed a new registrar," he said, adding that it was part of the protocol to review and verify the previous registrar's decision.
