Woman kills self in Tamil Nadu after a morphed picture of her circulates on Facebook
Police said they have requested the social networking site to share details of the person who posted the photo.
A 21-year woman hanged herself at her house in Salem, Tamil Nadu, on Monday after she faced harassment over a morphed photograph on Facebook. The chemistry graduate was taken to Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
The woman's father had lodged a complaint with Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Singh on June 23, the day the victim found her photograph on the social networking website. Kumar forwarded the complaint to Magudanchavadi police, reported The Hindu.
The police said that a youth was questioned in connection with the case, but no evidence of his involvement was found. The police had then asked for 15 days' time to seek the help of the cybercrime cell and locate the IP address of the culprit.
"We have filed a case of abetting suicide and have blocked the Facebook page that carried her pictures," said Amit Kumar, a police official, adding that they have also requested Facebook to share details of the person who posted the photograph.
The woman's family, however, has accused the police of being lax and not taking immediate action.
