Renowned artist and Padma Vibhushan awardee KG Subramanyan died on Wednesday in Vadodara, reported India Today. The 92-year-old was a pioneer in the modern art form ranging from paintings to pottery. He was based out of Baroda. His terracotta art, toy-making and designing is known across the world.

Subramanyan was born in Kerala and was involved in socialist and Gandhian activism. He was also imprisoned for a short while during the Quit India movement. He studied art at Kala Bhavan in Santiniketan under the guidance of Nandalal Bose and Ramkinkar Baij in the 1940s. Besides being an artist of international fame, he was also an art historian and taught at the Fine Arts department of Baroda's MS University as well as Kala Bhavan. He retired from Kala Bhavan in 1981.
