US lawmakers bring in a new Bill to block H1-B visas, Indian IT firms could feel the crunch
The proposed legislation needs to be passed by the Senate before it reaches President Barack Obama.
Two lawmakers in the United States have introduced a Bill in the House of Representatives that seeks to stop companies from hiring people on the H1-B and L-1 work visas if half their employees have already come in on them, PTI reported. The Bill limits the rule to companies that have more than 50 employees, but if passed, could adversely impact Indian Information Technology firms in the US, who bring in a large number of their workers from India on these visas.
Republican Dana Rohrabacher and Democrat Bill Pascrell introduced the H-1B and L-1 Visa Reform Act of 2016, saying “skilled, high-tech professionals” from the US have no jobs because companies bring in workers from abroad. A similar Bill was introduced in 2010, but it did not get passed. For a Bill to be passed in the US, it needs to be passed by the House of Representatives, then the Senate, and finally signed by President Barack Obama.
