Director Garry Marshall, known for creating iconic TV show Happy Days and cult classic romcom Pretty Woman, died on Tuesday in California, United States. Marshall, who had suffered from pneumonia and a subsequent stroke, was 81.

Marshall was known for creating a series of sitcoms in the 1970s including Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, The Odd Couple, Mork and Mindy – a breakthrough show for actor Robin Williams. His first big feature film was 1990s hit Pretty Woman, with Julia Roberts in one of her most popular roles.

Actor Richard Gere, who starred alongside Roberts, issued a statement saying. “Garry of course was one of those truly important people one is blessed to meet in one’s lifetime…he was a super fine and decent man, husband and father who brought real joy and love and infectious good spirits to every thing and everyone he crossed paths with.”

Marshall also directed other popular movies including the Princess Diaries franchise, Happy New Year and Valentine’s Day.
