Rajnath Singh conducts aerial survey of flood-hit Assam as state continues to reel
The home minister will meet people at the relief camps and visit Kaziranga National Park.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited Assam on Saturday to take stock of the flood situation in the state. He along with Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonwal and Union Minister Jitendra Singh conducted an aerial survey of the flood-hit areas, reported dna.
Singh is also scheduled to meet people at the relief camps and take stock of the situation in Kaziranga National Park, 90% of which is reportedly under water. The Home Minister's Office tweeted that Singh will also meet the people affected by the floods at Bhatgaon camp in Morigaon district.
Floods triggered by incessant rain have wrecked havoc in the state. More than 16 lakh people have been affected. Around 1.3 lakh people have been moved to relief camps, while the Army, National and State Disaster Response Force personnel are assisting rescue and relief efforts.
The toll rose to 20 on Thursday after five more deaths were reported from different parts of Assam. As many as 22 districts have been hit by the floods. The worst- affected ones are Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Bongaigaon, Jorhat, Dhemaji, Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri, Darrang, Morigaon and Sonitpur. The latest district to be submerged is South Kamrup. Brahmaputra and its tributaries are still flowing above the danger level in Guwahati, Jorhat, Sonitpur, Guwahati, Goalpara and Dhubri.
