Former Supreme Court judge Markandey Katju on Tuesday was appointed to head the Board of Control for Cricket in India's three-member legal panel. This panel was constituted to act as the "single-point interface" to coordinate with the Justice Lodha committee and advise and guide the cricketing body, according to a statement from the BCCI.

The 69-year-old, who earlier headed the Press Council of India and is well known for his opinionated posts on social media, will be joined by three eminent counsels, including BCCI's advocate Abhinav Mukherjee.

The statement read: "Considering the complexities of the issue, it was unanimously decided that a panel headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court, assisted by three eminent counsels including Abhinav Mukerjee, the counsel of BCCI, be formed...Accordingly, it was unanimously decided that honourable retired justice Markandey Katju will head the said panel."

The BCCI faces an overhaul after the Supreme Court, in a ruling in July, gave it six months to implement a majority of the recommendations of the Justice Lodha committee. The suggested reforms include changes in Indian cricket, which the cricketing body had opposed.
