Supreme Court seeks response from Gujarat on Teesta Setalvad's plea against bank accounts freezing
The Gujarat High Court had rejected their petition that sought control of their personal accounts, which were frozen after they were accused of embezzling.
The Supreme Court on Wednesday issued a notice to the Gujarat government, asking it respond to pleas filed by social activist Teesta Setalvad, her husband Javed Anand and two non-government organisations challenging the freezing of their bank accounts. The state was told to respond within two weeks. The bench of justices Dipak Misra and UU Lalit will hear the case again on September 21, reported PTI.
Setalvad, Anand and NGOs Sabrang Trust and Citizens for Justice and Peace had challenged the Gujarat High Court's verdict rejecting their pleas for unfreezing their personal bank accounts. Setalvad and others alleged that their accounts were frozen illegally.
The Ahmedabad Police had frozen their accounts after Setalvad and others were accused of embezzling Rs 1.51 crore that was collected to convert Gulberg Society into a riots museum. Gulberg Society is where 69 people were killed during the post-Godhra riots in 2002.
