Cricket: India lose by one run chasing 245 against West Indies in first Twenty20 International
India almost pulled off a world-record chase but fell short when MS Dhoni was dismissed off the last ball.
India almost pulled off the highest successful chase in Twenty20 Internationals, losing by just one run against West Indies in the first Twenty20 International at Lauderhill in the United States on Saturday. In response to West Indies' 245/6, India finished on 244/4 in their 20 overs.
West Indies smashed 21 sixes and powered to a humongous 245/6, their highest ever score and the third-highest score overall in Twenty20 Internationals. The destruction was majorly caused by their openers, Johnson Charles and Evin Lewis who raced to 126 in just 9.3 overs. Stuart Binny was hammered for 32 runs in one over before Mohammed Shami finally dismissed Charles for a 33-ball 79.
Evin Lewis went on to get a century in 49 balls, the fifth fastest in Twenty20 Internationals, before India's bowlers managed to get a few late wickets but could not stop West Indies from getting to a humongous score.
India raced off the blocks in their chase but lost early wickets in the first six overs. Ajinkya Rahane was dismissed, courtesy a fantastic catch by Dwayne Bravo while Virat Kohli was also dismissed cheaply. KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma kept the momentum going by hitting a few big ones as India raced to 116/2 in 10 overs.
Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 62 but KL Rahul kept India in the game as they needed 78 off the last six overs. MS Dhoni, however, ensured that there would be no let-up, hitting two sixes in the all-important 17th over to give India 33 runs to win in the last three overs. Rahul scored a brilliant century off just 46 balls and remained not out on 110 but Dwayne Bravo managed to defend seven runs off the last over to give West Indies a narrow one run victory.
