Upper castes should get 25% reservation, says Social Justice Minister Ramdas Athawale
The RPI(A) chief said if such a move is made constitutional, the poor from communities such as the Jats, Patels and Marathas will stop agitating.
Social Justice Minister Ramdas Athawale on Tuesday said he would write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking for 25% reservation for economically backward groups among upper castes, The Indian Express reported. The Republican Party of India (A) chief added that the limit for reservations in government jobs should be raised from the current 49.5% to 75% to make this happen.
According to The Indian Express, Athawale said reservations cannot be done away with, and he supports demands for them made by the Jats, Patels, Marathas and Brahmins. He added that “once this happens, there will be no agitations for reservations”. He said he hoped bringing this idea up with the prime minister would lead to a constitutional amendment.
