United Kingdom confirms involvement in US-led strike that killed Syrian troops
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had called the strike a 'flagrant aggression'.
The United Kingdom on Monday confirmed its involvement in a United States-led airstrike on Saturday that killed 62 Syrian government soldiers "unintentionally" while the coalition was supposedly targeting the Islamic State group, BBC reported. The UK's Ministry of Defence said the country was “fully co-operating with the coalition investigation into the incident” in which its unmanned Reaper drone took part. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had called it “a flagrant aggression”.
The United States, which co-ordinated the strike, had expressed “regret” for the “unintentional loss of life” caused by the incident. Russian officials claimed the strike over Syria’s Deir Ezzour province injured over 100 people. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights pegged the toll at 83 army personnel. Moscow and Washington had on September 10 announced a ceasefire plan for the “cessation of hostilities” between the Syrian government and opposition militia in the war-torn country.
