AAP legislator Somnath Bharti arrested for allegedly assaulting AIIMS security staff, gets bail
According to the FIR, the Malviya Nagar MLA had 'provoked a mob to damage the fence' of the government hospital.
Aam Aadmi Party legislator Somnath Bharti, who was arrested on Thursday for allegedly assaulting security guards at All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi earlier this month, has secured bail, NDTV reported. Bharti also confirmed his arrest in a tweet.
His arrest came days after the Chief Security Officer of AIIMS, RS Rawat, lodged an FIR at the Hauz Khas police station. He had accused Bharti and 27 of his supporters of misbehaving with the hospital's security personnel on September 6, reported NDTV. According to The Indian Express, Rawat in his complaint had mentioned that Bharti had “provoked a mob to damage the fence of government property. He gave permission to unauthorised people with excavator machines to get access inside AIIMS".
The MLA from south Delhi’s Malviya Nagar has refuted all the charges. He claimed that the hospital was encroaching on a public road to use it as a car-parking area, reported the Hindustan Times.
In December 2015, Bharti was arrested in connection with a domestic violence case filed by his wife Lipika Mitra. He evaded arrest for several days before surrendering to the police after the Supreme Court directed him to do so.
Bharti is the second AAP MLA to have been arrested in the past 24 hours. On Wednesday, the party's Okhla MLA, Amanatullah Khan, was arrested in connection with a sexual assault case filed by his sister-in-law.
